Bluegrass Guitar Breakdown: Channeling Dave Matthews’ Signature Sound

$0.00

Often, your earliest influences as a guitar player stick with you your whole life. Before I played Bluegrass guitar, I formed an acoustic duo playing a variety of styles including Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds songs. Once I started playing bluegrass music, I integrated a lot of techniques from my formative years of playing acoustic guitar. One of those techniques was what we used to affectionately call “Dave” chords which were the unique chord voicings and intervals of Dave Matthews. One of my compositions called “Tennessee” combines these unique chord voicings into a crosspicking intro section. In this short lesson, I wanted to cover the intro from this song that uses these “Dave” chords and explain how I was able to combine two distinct styles of guitar to create an interesting original tune.
